Sexual Health and HIV Education

  • Comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education is required to be taught in middle school
  • At Hillcrest, this curriculum is only taught during 8th grade
  • Parents may review the curriculum (below) or in the Hillcrest office
  • Curriculum is taught by specialists, over four class periods
  • Parents may opt their student out of these courses (form available below)

The California Healthy Youth Act (CHYA) requires that California public schools teach medically accurate, age-appropriate, LGBTQ-inclusive, comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education to middle school
students. Studies show that when science-based comprehensive sexual health education supports a diverse range of young people, it helps students become healthier and more successful adults.

Information for Spring 2018

Comprehensive sexual health & HIV prevention education will be instructed to Hillcrest 8th graders by experienced specialists from Forestville Teen Health Clinic during the week of May 14, 2018, over four class periods. You can examine instructional materials on the Hillcrest website, in the Parent Resources section, or in the Hillcrest main office. If you have questions, please contact Mr. Fichera at 823-7653 or dfichera@grav.k12.ca.us. State law allows you to opt your student out of these courses.
